A teenage worker who injured his hand in a workplace accident in October 2009 has received an accident compensation payout from his employer.
The young male worker was on his first day at Goscote-based JKL Industrial Services Ltd when the accident happened as he was attempting to operate a power press.
The worker managed to trap his hand in the machine, suffering severe injuries. Following the accident, the firm was prosecuted at Walsall Magistrates' Court for breaching Regulation 11 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
The firm was ordered to pay the worker £5,000 in accident compensation, alongside costs of £2,534.
Eve-Marie Edwards, Health and Safety Executive inspector said, "This young man has suffered permanent and debilitating injuries from an incident that should never have happened.
"JKL Industrial Services did not provide adequate guarding for the power press, failed to maintain the machine properly and failed also to ensure it was thoroughly examined by a competent person," she added.
In a similar accident, Machine Hire Ltd, a furniture firm based in Burnham was ordered to pay an employee accident compensation totalling £12,000 following a serious workplace accident that took place in March of last year.
