Accident compensation payout for woman injured in fall

A 63-year-old woman has been awarded an accident compensation payout after injuring herself in a fall at a shopping centre.

Gweneth Bowler was doing her shopping at the Leicester-based Highcross shopping centre when the accident took place in January of this year.

She was walking through the doors to the bridge located across Vaughn Way from the car park with her daughter when she slipped over. The surface was wet and she injured her shoulder seriously as a result of the fall.

The woman was immediately taken to hospital and was treated for a fractured hip and a fractured shoulder. Following the accident, Ms Bowler has reported that she now finds it difficult to do certain things, such as driving her car and lifting objects.

Ms Bowler made an accident compensation claim against the owners of the Highcross shopping centre, Hammerson Plc, in order to 'improve safety for others,' according to The Leicester Mercury.

The compensation awarded to the woman during the case – which was settled out of court – was a 'significant sum,' reported the local newspaper.

Following the woman's accident, a thorough health and safety inspection was carried out at the centre. The investigation revealed that the slippery surface was dangerous, and anti-slip mats have now been fitted to doorways in a bid to cut down on the likelihood of anyone else slipping over. Other safety measures are also said to have been implemented at the shopping centre.
